Message from Mayor John Spuhler

It is my pleasure to welcome you to Garden City where the Utah slogan “Life Elevated” is more appropriate here than anywhere else.

As a town in the northeastern corner of the state, Garden City is privileged to be a resort destination on the shores of Bear Lake, which is often said to be the "Caribbean of the Rockies" due to its stunning clear blue water.  Garden City staff and infrastructure supports nearly one thousand second home owners and about five hundred full time residents.  A diverse population of thousands of people come in the summer from all over the world to experience “life elevated” Garden City style.

The massive population influx on the town creates opportunities and difficult challenges. Here are a few items the Town is working on to make sure you will be able to enjoy your home for years to come:

1.            Water-Garden City has just built a plant that will treat and provide adequate water for many years to come.  The plant can filter 3.5 million gallons of water per day, a requirement during the summer. The plant cost 5.5 million dollars and it was a requirement of the Federal Government and the State of Utah.

2.            Roads- Each year Garden City spends tens of thousands of dollars on maintaining and upgrading our roads and paths. We are working with State and the Federal Governments to look at more opportunity for biking, four wheeling and snowmobile access from Garden City paths to state and federal land.

3.            Planning and Zoning-Garden City has a new development policy requiring standards both financial and infrastructure related.  All standards must be met for future development. We believe in good development based on sound policies.

4.            Parks, Library, Pool, Beach management and the Arts- Garden City fully believes investment in areas that benefit education and health and general welfare of our community is vital to living life elevated. We will continue to host events that strengthen economic development as well as create memories to last a lifetime.

5.            Entertainment shopping and dining opportunities are increasing all over the town. Garden City is home to locally owned restaurants, each famous for Raspberry shakes and for a trademark meal. The downtown area houses specialty shops where visitors can pick-up hand-made souvenirs.

6.            Environment-Garden City is working closely with the State of Utah on issues that will maintain the beautiful blue of Bear Lake. The lake is a treasure and must be treated as such and to those ends the Town has partnered with Utah on areas of concern such invasive species of plants and mussels that could do irreversible harm to this natural wonder.

The Town is also rich in history on the Shores of Bear Lake, Native Americans and Trappers traded with each other and the first Oregon Trail menders along the shore line. In addition the area was settled by hearty Mormon Pioneers who came from colder countries of Europe to make better lives for themselves and to enjoy religious freedom.

Wherever you came from and wherever you are going, I am sure you will enjoy Garden City and “Living Life Elevated” while you are here. We look forward to having you.  Our town Council meets monthly and you can get on the agenda if you have questions, comments or suggestions to improve our collective experiences.
